Multiple self help Mechanic Books were available to aid the owner. The engines were amazingly durable, but regular valve adjustments, and clean oil were important.
Mid 1960s thru the 70s Beetles were everywhere in the U.S. A cultural part of young motorists, their low cost, easy maintenance, and good fuel economy they were associated with the Vietnam anti war and drop-out Hippie movements. I owned two, a used 67, and a new 71. 1971 and later bugs, unfortunately for enthusiasts, had a McPherson strut from suspension, not suitable for dune buggies.

Aftermarket parts/accessories were and remain widely available, not surprising with millions of aging bugs scattered across the land.

Designed by Ghia of Italy, the "Poor Man's Porsche", gave VW a sporty 2-seater.
Porsche
