One of the most adored Mercedes ever. The 260 ...

Mercedes280.jpg

Above 280 SL. Mercedes 230/250/280 models were/are highly regarded by their owners. Launched in Frankfort in 1963 and ended in 1971. The initial 6-cylinder fuel injected in line engine can  do 124 mph, 0-60 in 9 seconds.

Included were a tool set, fog and hazard lamps, first aid kit, spare gas can, fanfare horns, tow bar, two-tone paint, white wall tires ... most later models were shipped to the U.S., most with with automatic transmissions, remainders with 4-speed manuals.

Volkswagen

Built (Type 1 Beetle)  1938-2003

Number Built:             21.5 Million

First Sold in U.S.          1949

A Vision of Adolf Hitler, the Peoples Car came to life

New Beetle (front engine)  1997-2011

A5 Beetle 2011-2019

Karman Ghia

Built       1955-1974

Number Built     445,000

Engines were 1300/1500/1600 cc (cubic centimeters).  Flat 4-Cylinder opposed configuration with overhead valves.

Multiple self help Mechanic Books were available to aid the owner. The engines were amazingly durable, but regular valve adjustments, and clean oil were important.

Mid 1960s thru the 70s Beetles were everywhere in the U.S.  A cultural part of young motorists, their low cost, easy maintenance, and good fuel economy they were associated with the Vietnam anti war and drop-out Hippie movements.  I owned two, a used 67, and a new 71. 1971 and later bugs, unfortunately for enthusiasts, had a McPherson strut from suspension, not suitable for dune buggies.

Aftermarket parts/accessories were and remain widely available, not surprising with millions of aging bugs scattered across the land.
